Greg Westermayer resigned as head football coach at Windsor in November. Westermayer, a 1999 Windsor graduate, was the Owls head coach for seven years. He compiled a record of 21-50 and won a Class 4 district championship in his first year (2010).
“I’ve been very fortunate that our current administration and school board have allowed me the opportunity to coach after I became an administrator,” said Westermayer, who is also an assistant principal at the high school. “I’m fortunate the powers to be allowed me to continue on my career path.”
Westermayer has three young daughters – ages 1, 3 and 5 – and he said they were a major influence in his decision to step down from football.
Windsor finished 4-6 this season and the high-flying Owls were one of the most entertaining offensive teams in the county, gaining more than 5,000 yards. They boasted a 2,000-yard rusher (running back Brandon Fouts) and a 1,000-yard rusher (quarterback Kael Ward).
“I’ll miss the kids and the camaraderie of being with the coaches and doing the things we do on a weekly basis,” he said. “The same can be said about the student-athletes; trying to prepare them for their future. Coaching in general has always been an avenue to prepare kids for life.”
Westermayer was a two-time all-state defensive back his junior and senior years at Windsor. After graduating from Windsor, Westermayer played football for two years at Southeast Missouri State University. During his junior and senior years at SEMO, Westermayer broke into the coaching ranks as an assistant football coach at Perryville. He was an assistant coach at Festus and De Soto before taking over at Windsor.
“I care about the school, the community and our program,” Westermayer said. “It will always be a home to me. After I met with the players, I sent a letter to the parents of our players and it wasn’t a farewell letter, it was a thank you letter.”
Windsor also is looking for a new athletic director. Current AD Kevin Stoffey retired from teaching at Windsor in 2011, but stayed on as the head wrestling coach and added the AD duties on an interim basis for this school year. Stoffey said last week the candidates are being reviewed by the school board and the new football coach and athletic director could be announced next month.
“All your decisions in athletics for the next school year are made in the early spring, so I’d hope we’d have these positions filled by the end of January,” Stoffey said. “We’ve had a lot of applicants for all the positions. There are quite a few people in house for the football job and athletic director job. Some of the current football staff will apply. Any one of them I think would make a good head coach.”
