Class 5 District 1 championship

Tonight (March 4) 7:30 p.m. at De Soto High

Festus, No. 2 seed, 21-5 vs. Cape Girardeau Central, No. 1, 21-5

The two top seeds in the district collide tonight in what appears to be an even matchup.

Although Festus and Cape Central, both nicknamed the Tigers, haven’t met this season, they’ve played plenty of common opponents in North County, Fox, Hillsboro, Sikeston, Farmington, Park Hills Central and De Soto. Cape Central was 7-2 against those teams, with a 90-19 win over De Soto and 54-38 victory against North County in the first two rounds of districts. Festus is 9-2 against the common opponents and has beaten Farmington 66-56 and Sikeston 54-47 in districts.

Cape Central last won a district title (Class 4 District 1) in 2019. Festus hasn’t won a district championship since beating Hillsboro for the Class 4 District 3 crown in 2013.

The winner plays the District 2 champion in the state quarterfinals at St. Louis Community College on March 12. Vianney (14-14) plays Webster Groves (19-7) for the District 2 title on Saturday.
