Northwest girls wrestling

Two dozen girls have joined Northwest's first girls wrestling team.

Check your Leader on Nov. 29 for the annual prep wrestling previews. This year, girls will wrestle separately from the boys under the Missouri State High School Activities Association guidelines.

According to MSHSAA, participation in girls wrestling increased from 196 to 825 this season, a 321 percent jump from 2017-2018. The number of girls on Jefferson County teams ranges from four at De Soto to 24 at Northwest. The Lions have hired a female assistant coach with college wrestling experience.

There are four districts for girls wrestling and that tournament will be held the week before the boys go to districts. The boys and girls will compete at the state tournament at the same time on Feb. 14-16 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.
