Wayne C. Ashwell, 80, of St. Louis County died Aug. 10, 2021, at his home. Mr. Ashwell was retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. and was a member Telephone Pioneers of America. He served in the U.S. National Guard as a sergeant in the 138th Infantry, and he was a member of Prince of Peace United Church of Christ in St. Louis County, as well as the Lindbergh Alumni Association: Lindbergh Leader 1998 and Distinguished Alumni 2008. He was a life member of the Sappington-Concord Historical Society and the Missouri State Troopers MASTERS Society. He was a lifelong Scouter with Troop 25 and Medical Explorer Post 9152. He also was an amateur radio operator and member of American Radio Relay League. Born Nov. 23, 1940, in St. Louis, he was the son of the late Elsie and Clifford Ashwell.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years: Jeanine (Lony) Ashwell of St. Louis; two children: Scott (Tracey) Ashwell of House Springs and Susan (Mark) Schraut of St. Louis; a sibling: Warren (Darlene) Ashwell of Cedar Hill; and seven grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Erin and Colin Ashwell, all of House Springs, and Sarah, Emily, Megan and Andrew Schraut, all of St. Louis.
Funeral services were held Aug. 16 at Prince of Peace UCC in St. Louis County, officiated by the Rev. Brad Urban and the Rev. Fred Wehrenberg. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park in Affton. Memorials may be made to the Wayne Ashwell Memorial Scholarship Fund, with checks payable to the Lindbergh Schools Foundation, 9350 Sappington Road, St. Louis, 63126, or to the National Association for Amateur Radio Education and Technology Fund. Arrangements were under the direction of John L. Ziegenhein & Sons Funeral Home in St. Louis County.
