Walter A. Martin Sr., 91, of De Soto died Feb. 20, 2021, at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. Mr. Martin was a union ironworker, a member of Ironworkers Local 396 and a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the De Soto Elks Lodge, First Baptist Church in De Soto and the Washington County Sheriff’s Department Auxiliary. He enjoyed baseball, spending time with his family and having coffee with his friends at McDonald’s. Born June 22, 1929, in Cadet, he was the son of the late Charles and Rosa M. (Yates) Martin.
He is survived by his wife: Geraldine (Payne) Martin; four children: Walter A. “Tate” Martin Jr. of Festus, Tim (Catherine Richardson) Martin of De Soto, John (Michelle) Martin of De Soto and Rob (Crystal) Martin of De Soto; 15 grandchildren: Cole, Chloe, Cayse, Claire, Tyson, Trevon, Malaya, Aaron, Colton, Shelby, Delaney, Mason, Dalton, Taylor and Cayden; and one great-grandchild: Raina.
He was preceded in death by three sisters: Cleta Cornegie, Charlene Graham and Carolyn Sloan Beno; and six brothers: William “Bill” Martin, Sam Martin, John Martin, Robert Martin, Art Martin and Bud Martin.
Visitation is from 4 p.m. until a funeral service at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at Dietrich-Mothershead Funeral Home, 220 N. Main St., in De Soto.
