Sister Alice Gertrude Haslag, 93, of Liguori died Jan. 29, 2019, at St. Andrews at Francis Place in Eureka. Sister Haslag, a member of the Order of the Most Holy Redeemer, entered the Sisters of St. Mary in St. Louis in 1948. Trained as a physical therapist, she ministered in hospitals in St. Louis and other places. She earned a doctorate degree in physiotherapy and taught physiology at the St. Louis School of Medicine. In 1968, she transferred to the Redemptoristine monastery at Liguori, where she was a formator, infirmarian and seamstress. She is remembered as having a quiet presence, a deep spirit of prayer and great compassion, especially for those oppressed under apartheid in South Africa, where she served on a mission trip. Born Oct. 31, 1925, in Loose Creek, she was the daughter of the late Mary (Backas) and Charles Haslag.

She is survived by a sister: Margaret Schaefer of Linn; 19 nieces and nephews; and her fellow Redemptoristine sisters.

She was preceded in death by three sisters: Anna Niekamp, Frances Niekamp and Angela Eads; two brothers: Alfred and Clarence Haslag; a sister-in-law: Esther Haslag; and four brothers-in-law: Ray Niekamp, Albert Niekamp, Bill Eads, and Herbert Schaefer.

A wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at the Redemptoristine Chapel, 200 Liguori Drive, Liguori. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at the chapel. Memorials may be made to the Redemptoristine Nuns, 200 Liguori Drive, Liguori MO 63057. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home, Festus.
