Hinton, Walter

Walter Eugene “Gene” Hinton, 84, of Pevely died July 25, 2024, at his home. Mr. Hinton was a member of Selma American Baptist Church in Festus. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and retired from the GM Plants in St. Louis and Wentzville as an autoworker. When not spending time with family, he enjoyed the outdoors, woodworking and hanging out with the barbershop crew. Born Sept. 30, 1939, in Waterford, Ohio, he was the son of the late Lucy Maxine and Reuben Walter Hinton.

He is survived by his wife: Bonnie Faye (Whitehead) Hinton; three children: Vickie (Frank) Rockwell of Queen Creek, Ariz., Karen (Gary) Friedmeyer of Festus and Kenneth Hinton of Pevely; a brother: Jack (Bonnie Sue) Hinton of Shelbyville, Ky.; four grandchildren: Amy (DJ) Hurley, Ryan (Terri) Friedmeyer, Lauren (Bobby) Sullivan and Kristin Hinton; and four great-grandchildren: Carson Hurley, Owen Hurley, Harper Hurley and Bodie Friedmeyer.

He was preceded in death by three siblings: Loretta (the late John) Quire, Rosemary (the late Eugene) King and Wayne Hinton.

Visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. until a funeral service at 10 a.m. today, July 29, at Vinyard Funeral Home, 616 W. Main St., in Festus, officiated by Deacon Shawn Williams. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in Bernie Memorial Cemetery in Bernie. Memorials may be made to Selma American Baptist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
