Virginia Mary “Ginny” Kamp, 85, of Bloomington, Ill., formerly of De Soto, died Jan. 26, 2025. Mrs. Kamp was a 1957 graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy and a 1960 graduate of DePaul School of Nursing. She worked as an RN in the maternity ward at St. Mary’s Hospital in St. Louis. After raising her family, she returned to nursing, becoming a part-time nurse for De Soto Public Schools. She later volunteered and then became director of Birthright of Hillsboro. Active in her children’s lives, she served as leader of both the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She and her husband were members of several Bible Studies and small groups in their home, at both St. Rose and St. Patrick’s churches. While a member of St. Rose of Lima Church in De Soto, she was involved in the Daughters of Isabella, was a ProLife advocate and, after her son’s death, she started a grief support group at the church. After moving to Bloomington, she was a member of St. Patrick Church of Merna and was involved in religious education and St. Vincent DePaul. Born Oct. 11, 1939, in St. Louis, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Virginia (Bergs) Croak.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Donald B. Kamp, whom she married on Aug. 19, 1961, in St. Louis.
She is survived by six children: James Kamp of Fairview, N.C., Mary (Len) Costley of Hayward, Wis., Margi (Greg) Christopher of Bloomington, Cathy (Jesse) Luesing of Downs, Nancy (Brian) Warden of Cumming, Ga., and Julie (Jason) Kamp-Triefenbach of Portland, Ore.; 11 grandchildren: Taylor (Sinan) Akkoseoglu, Jake and Lauren Christopher, Josie (Tim) Anderson, Jed Costley, Hunter, Steven and Olivia Luesing, Jack and Tyler Warden and Matthew (Cailyn) Ruck; four great-grandchildren: Halime Akkoseoglu, Berkley Costley and Elizabeth and Nolan Ruck.
She also was preceded in death by a son: Joseph Kamp; a granddaughter: Molly Warden; a daughter-in-law: Carla Weitzel-Kamp; and four siblings: James “Jim”, John “Jack”, Anthony “Bud” and Mary Virginia Croak.
Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. until a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 504 S. 3rd St., in De Soto, officiated by Father Rodger Fleming. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in De Soto. Memorials may be made to Birthright of Hillsboro, 407 3rd St., Suite 4302, Hillsboro, 63050.
