Vestel "Mike" Marion Yates, 88, of Perryville died Nov. 13, 2023, at his home. Mr. Yates was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He worked as an operating engineer for Local 513 and then spent 12 years as a corrections officer before he retired. He was a member of Local 513 for 55 years, Boy Scouts of America, American Legion of Perryville and the NRA. He was proud of being an Eagle Scout, serving as a Scout Master. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, cooking, woodworking, clock making and most importantly spending time with his family and friends. Born July 5, 1935, in Scott County, Ill., he was the son of the late Oscar Yates and Cleta M. (Tipsword) Yates.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years: Nancy Lou (Kanyo) Yates of Perryville; two daughters: Cindy L. (William) Ford of Kalispell, Mont. and Mindy S. (Steven) Huskey of Perryville; a stepson: Jimmy D. (Evelyn) Hudgins of Chesterfield, Ill.; two granddaughters: Amy (Andy) Kirk of Columbia Falls, Mont. and Anna (Rev. Chazz) Upton of Kalispell, Mont; two great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, 115 West Buena Vista St., in Chester, Ill. 62233. Arrangements are under the direction of Mahn Funeral Home in De Soto.
