Tommy Joe Wilson, 81, of De Soto died May 30, 2024, at his home. Mr. Wilson retired from Jefferson College where he taught public speaking, theatre and other communications courses and directed dozens of plays for the college. He attended Hendrix College and graduated from Arkansas State Teachers College and the University of Arkansas. He was a member of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in De Soto where he served in the choir and in several committee leadership positions. He was active in the De Soto Elks Lodge 689. He spent a summer working on the early archeological digs at Mastodon State Park. He was a scratch golfer, hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially chasing smallmouth in the Ozark streams and spending time with family and friends. He will be remembered for his generosity and compassion. Born Aug. 27, 1942, in Conway, Ark., he was the son of the late David Harold and Mary Jewel Wilson.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years: Charla Jean Wilson; three children: Todd (Mary), Kelton and JoDee (Tim); two brothers: Charles (Beth) and Bob (Paula); 5 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother: David (Judy); and a sister: Billie (Bill).
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, June 21, at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, 1004 Rock Road, in De Soto, 63020. Memorials may be made to St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church Musical Department. Arrangements are under the direction of Dietrich-Mothershead Funeral Home in De Soto.
