Brown, Sidney

Sidney Louis “Sid” Brown, 91, of Crystal City died April 24, 2024. Mr. Brown graduated from Douglass High School in Festus in 1951 and went on to work for the city of Crystal City as a laborer and later Pittsburgh Plate Glass. After PPG, he worked as an operator at DOW Chemical until retirement. He was a member and trustee of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Douglass Alumni Association, William H. Ashcraft Lodge 6 Kirkwood, Crystal City Planning and Zoning, Jefferson County Habitat for Humanity, the Mt. Zion Cemetery Board and the NAACP. He enjoyed traveling, playing and listening to music, pitching horseshoes, helping others and spending time with his family and friends. Born Feb. 8, 1933, in Crystal City, he was the son of the late Minnie (Cockrell) and Henry Brown.

He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 66 years, Shirley Jean (Mosby) Brown.

He is survived by two daughters: Valerie (Willie) Brown-Taylor and Audrey C. (Marvin) Mitchell of Montgomery, Texas; three sisters: Lillian Tullock of Crystal City, Pauline White of Festus and Rose (Ronald) Wansley of Crystal City; three grandchildren: Cyd Brown,  Adrianne (Chris) Kelly and Kayla (Ty-Juan Norfleet Sr.) Crawford; seven great-grandchildren: Jailyn Duke, Destiny Kelly, Daylon “D.J.” Kelly, Ty-Juan Norfleet Jr., Karter Norfleet, Kaylee Duke and Tatum Norfleet; and many other family members and friends.

He also was preceded in death by four brothers: Henry Brown Jr., Charles (Mary) Brown, Wayne Brown and Donald (Marie) Johnson; and two sisters: Ottomese (Joe) Hollis and Charlotte (Benjamin) Evans.

Visitation is scheduled from 11 a.m. until services at 1 p.m.  Saturday, May 11. at Mahn Twin City Chapel, 515 Collins Ave., in Festus, officiated by Elder Culton. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Crystal City. Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity, Alzheimer’s Association or the Salvation Army. Arrangements are under the direction of Mahn Twin City Chapel.
