Swarts, Raymond

Raymond David Swarts Jr., 80, of House Springs died Aug. 19, 2025, at his home. Mr. Swarts was a lifelong member of Ironworkers Local Union 396, where he dedicated his career to building the structures that shaped the community, such as Busch Stadium, St. Louis Convention Center, Monsanto Queeny Plant, Anheuser Busch Brewery and many others. He was known for his strong work ethic, craftsmanship and commitment to his union brothers and sisters.

He will be remembered not only for his skill and dedication as an ironworker, but also for his love of the outdoors, fishing, hunting, cars and watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball. He also was known as a casino aficionado and storyteller, with a tremendous sense of humor. He loved spending time with family and friends. Born Jan. 23, 1945, in St. Louis, he was the son of the late Agnes (Hagedorn) and Raymond Swarts Sr.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Rebecca (DeBerry) Swarts.

He is survived by three children: Theresa (Collin) Krill, Tracy (Tom) Poole and Gregg (Jen) Swarts; two grandchildren: Gregg Swarts Jr. and Jaidyn Swarts; a great-grandchild: Aubree Carlstrom; three siblings: Carl (Daisy) Swarts, Russell (Janice) Swarts and JoAnn (Tommy) Oster; his companion: Toni Royer; and many other family members and friends.

He also was preceded in death by a son: Rick Hudelson; a granddaughter: Rebecca Benthal; a nephew: David Swarts; and his dog: Tanner.

Visitation will be from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at Schrader Funeral Home and Crematory, 14960 Manchester Road, in Ballwin, with a eulogy at 3:45 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Principal Wellness Caregivers, 2010 Missouri Ave., Crystal City, 63019. Arrangements are under the direction of Schrader Funeral Home and Crematory.
