Paul Byron Hawkins, 71, of De Soto died March 12, 2025, after a strong fight with cancer. Mr. Hawkins grew up in northeast Arkansas, graduated from Corning High School and then moved to De Soto where he worked for Union Pacific Railroad as a machinist. There, he shared many laughs with those he worked with and was always ready to “cut up” with his friends. In 1973 he married Joyce Spreckelmeyer and they had a daughter. He was known for his creative mind, having the knack of a true “MacGyver” and being capable of fixing things with whatever materials he had available. In his later years, he enjoyed sharing his unique art style with others at local bars, VFW halls and with “the girls” at the credit union he frequented. He enjoyed offering kind words to strangers which he dubbed “drive-by flower throwing.” He will be remembered for his quick wit and giving spirit. Born April 4, 1953, in Jonesboro, Ark., he was the son of JoAnn Hawkins of Joplin and the late Jim Hawkins.
He was preceded in death by his second wife: Carla Burns Hawkins.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter: Selena Hawkins (Jake) Myracle of Ste. Genevieve; two grandchildren: Kaleb Myracle and Maggie Myracle, both of Ste. Genevieve; two brothers: Michael Hawkins and Kenny (Melinda) Sisson of Farmington; a sister: Shannon (Karl) Hawkins Wendt of Joplin; and many other family members and friends.
Arrangements are under the direction of Basler Funeral Home in Ste. Genevieve.
