Obie Delmar Young, 106, of Hematite died April 13, 2025, at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. Mr. Young was an Army Air Force veteran who served in WWII as a tank gunner in the European theater. He began working in 1948 as a plant foreman for the Mallinckrodt Chemical Corp. in St. Louis. He also worked at Sears and Roebuck in De Soto. He retired from Combustion Engineering in 1988. He was a member of Second Baptist Church in Festus, a volunteer for the Jefferson Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the American Red Cross. He also was a longtime election judge at the Hematite polls. Born Sept. 15, 1918, in Minimum, he was the son of the late Dora Clementine (Reed) and Jeff Thomas Young.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years: Verma Louise (Parton) Young.
He is survived by two daughters: Nancy Doretta (Bob) Rudolph of Hematite and Barbara Young of Hematite; and a grandson: Bob “Travis” Rudolph II of Herculaneum.
He also was preceded in death by five siblings: Eual (the late Stella) Young, Earl (the late Mary) Young, Lola (the late Leonard) Dettmer, June (the late Bob) LaPlant and Louie (the late Helen) Young.
Visitation is scheduled from 4-7 p.m. Monday, April 21, at Second Baptist Church, 723 Horine Road, in Festus. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until services at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, at Second Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor James King. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens in Crystal City. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home in Festus.
