Mary Agnes Kenefick, 91, of Hillsboro died Nov. 13, 2023. Mrs. Kenefick was also known as Sister Carl Joseph for having formerly served as a nun with the Carondelet Sisters of St. Joseph. She was a dedicated teacher at several Catholic schools and taught at Affton Grade School. She had a creative side and loved to create oil paintings and crafts. She was also an avid water skier. Born Nov. 21, 1931, in St. Louis, she was the daughter of Carl and Eulalia (Prinster) Schaeffer.
She is survived by her husband: George Thomas Kenefick Jr.; a daughter: Mary Karin Cote; and two grandchildren: Thomas Jacob and Jean Luke Cote; and six siblings: Joan (the late Charles) Nigh, Virginia (the late Charlie) McFarland, Lois (John) Pollard, Jane (Robert) Harr, Judy (Frank) Fenton and John (Margie) Schaeffer.
She was preceded in death by ten siblings: Jerry (Phylis) Schaeffer, Charlie (Anne) Schaeffer, Anita (Charlie) Sweeney, Robert (Loretto survives) Schaeffer, Rita (Richard) Franklin, Ruth Schaeffer, Carole (Raymond) Kramer, Tom (Ellen) Schaeffer, Richard (Carol survives) Schaeffer and Mark (April) Schaeffer.
Visitation is scheduled from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at Kutis Funeral Home South County Chapel, 5255 Lemay Ferry Road, in St. Louis. A funeral Mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at Assumption Catholic Church, 4725 Mattis Road, in St. Louis. Burial will be on Monday, Nov. 20, at Good Shepherd Cemetery in Hillsboro. Memorials may be made to Birthright of Hillsboro. Arrangements are under the direction of Kutis Funeral Home South County Chapel.
