James Richard Smith, 75, of Eureka died March 12, 2026. Mr. Smith, known to many as “Smitty,” was a 1969 graduate of Northwest High School in House Springs. He went on to earn an associate degree in computer technology from Jefferson Community College. In his younger years, he was passionate about Harley-Davidson Motorcycles. He retired after a successful, rewarding career and was known for his strong work ethic. He was the founder of the annual "Good Ole Boys" fishing tournament. He was also an avid gardener and had a lifelong love for dogs. Later in life, he grew to enjoy bird watching. He will be remembered for his genuine nature, kind heart, integrity and hearty laugh. Born April 27, 1950, in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of the late Clarice Estell (Thorne) and Abbie Junior Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years: Sonya (Grimes) Smith; two daughters: Cindy (Craig) Vogel-Langley and Toni Voss; four grandchildren: Cody (Jenna) Vogel, Allyson Cutter, Brady Cutter and Savannah Vogel; a great-grandchild expected in November; three siblings: Jerry Smith, Mary (the late Joe) Maxwell and Shirley Smith Godsil; a brother-in-law: Edward Olson; numerous nieces and nephews; and many other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by a sister: Judy (Smith) Olson.
Visitation is scheduled from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, at Chapel Hill Mortuary, 6300 Hwy. 30, in Cedar Hill. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, at the funeral home.
