James R. Stolzer, 84, of Festus died April 5, 2025, at his home. Mr. Stolzer was born in River Aux Vases and grew up in a family of 13 children. After graduating from Valle High School, he served in the U.S. Army and then married his wife in 1963. He had a career in manufacturing for more than 50 years and was known for his hard work. In retirement, he enjoyed walking in the park, gardening and birdwatching during the warmer months. During the winter, he enjoyed completing puzzle books, watching football and putting together jigsaw puzzles. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; he loved watching them swim in the pool while he sat in the sun. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife, family and friends, having traveled to more than 40 states and many national parks. Born Jan. 12, 1941, he was the son of the late Raymond and Mary (Rigdon) Stolzer.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years: Carol (Baumann) Stolzer; five children: Kris (Steve) Lindsey, Sandy (John) Dawson, Diane, Greg (Sue) and Mark; six grandchildren: Alex (Taylor), Austin (Kaytlynn), Matthew, Jack, Annie and Emery; two great-grandchildren: Ryleigh and Trey; eight siblings: Joan Gettinger, Cathy (Jim) Donze, Mike (Ann), Paul (Glenda), Margie (Earl) Walker, Mary (Tom) Schwartz, Lorretta (Duane) Griffard and Pat Regan; and many other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by a son: Kevin; a sister and brother-in-law: Marilyn and Dan Tarelton; two sisters: Bernie Freidman and Betty Mae Stolzer; a brother: Tom; and a brother-in-law: Don Gettinger.
A memorial gathering is scheduled for 10 a.m. until a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Monday, April 14, at Our Lady Catholic Church, 1550 St. Mary’s Lane, in Festus. Memorials may be made to de Greeff Hospice House/Mercy South Hospice Care or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Arrangements are under the direction of Mahn Twin City Chapel in Festus.
