Gowan, James

James L. Gowan, 85, of Hillsboro died June 2, 2024. Mr. Gowan was raised in Pennsylvania and later moved to the St. Louis metropolitan area where he met his wife and started a family. A former mayor of Hillsboro, he also served his community as an alderperson, a trustee for the Eagle Ridge Subdivision, a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church and a substitute teacher at the Area Technical School of Jefferson College. Before his retirement, he enjoyed a varied career as a mechanical engineer, designing processes and equipment in several industries, in which he earned four patents and several other intellectual properties. He was also proud to have served as a staff sergeant in the military. In addition to being a sailing enthusiast, he enjoyed playing guitar and other instruments and playing games with friends and family. Born on July 12, 1938, in Chester, Pa., he was the son of the late Gladys E. (Smith) and Albert S. Gowan.

He is survived by his wife: Barbara (Schaefer) Gowan; a daughter: Rebecca (Christopher) Waller; two sons: Scott (Lori) Gowan and Keith (Sylvia) Gowan; four grandchildren: Jessica (Art) Waller-Armour, Kiersten Waller, Samantha Gowan and Jonathan Gowan; three great-grandchildren: Christopher, Joshua and Alexandria; and many other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother: Albert J. Gowan; and a daughter-in-law: Sylvia (Keith) Assaad.

A private celebration of life will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Dietrich-Mothershead Funeral Home in De Soto.
