Gilbert, Jack

Jack A. Gilbert, 77, of House Springs died Jan. 31, 2024, in Eureka. After 32 years of employment as a tool and die maker at Sunnen Products, Mr. Gilbert moved to Koshkonong, to pursue his second career and hobby as a cattle rancher. After many years, he moved back to be closer to his friends and family. He spent his time in the "shop" making knives and axes and helping restore a 1967 Dodge Dart with his son-in-law, Curt. Known as a man of few words, he will be remembered for his vast knowledge and advice. He found solace in the outdoors where he enjoyed biking, kayaking, fishing, spending time at the gun range and sometimes sitting outside having a couple of beers and "watching the world go by.” Born July 26, 1946, in St. Louis, he was the son of the late Margaret (Ferking) and Thurston Gilbert.

He is survived by two children: Denise (Robert) Bullock of Scott City and Tracy (Curt) Simpher of House Springs; two grandchildren: Olivia (Stephen) Hubbard and Connor Bullock; a sister: Jean Gilbert of Berkeley; and many other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by a sister: Jane McNear.

A memorial visitation is scheduled from noon until 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at Chapel Hill Mortuary, 6300 Hwy. 30, in Cedar Hill. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Cedar Hill. Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel Hill Mortuary.
