Frederick Nicholas Steinmetz, 95, of Hillsboro died Aug. 19, 2026. Mr. Steinmetz was a 1949 Jennings High School graduate and was an active member of the Jennings High School Alumni Reunion Group for 77 years. He served in the Army on the Honest John Missile Battery. He graduated from St. Louis University in 1953 with a bachelor’s in business. He also completed a master’s degree in business. He worked for McDonnell Aircraft Co. in St. Louis as a computer programmer for business machines for more than 20 years. After retiring from McDonnell Douglas, he volunteered for many years in the Hillsboro Sheriff’s Office. His hobbies included boating, water-skiing and flying as a civilian pilot. He loved opera, poetry and reading through the Bible morning and evening for decades. He also loved to travel and see new and exotic places. He traveled to Brazil, many islands, and took several Windjammer cruises along the coast of South America, traveling up the Amazon River. He traveled extensively around Europe, from Norway to southern Italy. He traveled with his nephew across the UK to Edinburgh, Scotland and to the tip of Britain and the Cliffs of Dover in an American minivan, navigating by paper maps and singing Italian opera along the way. A devoted Christian, he was an active member and in lay leadership at Belew's Creek Chapel. Born June 7, 1931, in St. Louis, he was the son of the late Frederick Christian Steinmetz and Arlene Pfeiffer Steinmetz.
He is survived by his sister-in-law: Sharon Steinmetz; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, including Karen Steinmetz (Mitch) Dantzler and family, Jon (Christina) Steinmetz and family, Laurie Steinmetz (Darryl) Young and family, Robert (Robin) Steinmetz and family and Matthew Steinmetz.
He was preceded in death by his younger brother and best friend: Colonel (retired) Lyle “Beau” Steinmetz.
Visitation is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. until a funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at Chapel Hill Mortuary, Robert Brown Chapel, 103 Fourth St., in Hillsboro. Interment will follow in Belew's Creek Cemetery in Hillsboro. Memorials may be made to the Belew's Creek Chapel and Cemetery fund. Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel Hill Mortuary, Robert Brown Chapel.
