Eugene Mason “Coach” Myers, 88, of Chesterfield died Oct. 20, 2024. Mr. Myers earned his bachelor's degree in physical education and mathematics from Southeast Missouri State University and his master's in administration from Kirksville Missouri State University. He was a longtime Herculaneum United Methodist Church member and their treasurer for many years. He also taught both youth and adult Sunday School. After moving to Eureka, he was involved in the Eureka United Methodist Church. He served on committees, continued to teach Sunday School, mentored those going through confirmation, used his woodworking skills to frame the stained-glass windows made by the church members and made candle holders for those baptized at the church. He taught high school math and algebra and was the high school boys’ basketball coach at Herculaneum High School for 13 years followed by 13 more years at Eureka High School. He was later the assistant men's basketball coach at Maryville University for 10 years. He was known as a mentor and inspiration for many young men who also called him friend and spent numerous hours talking to and listening to his players; making time for them even when he knew dinner was probably on the table waiting for him at home. Mr. Myers was a member of 4H, NEA, MSTA and Gemmer Muzzle-Loading Gun Club. He was also active in the Senior Olympics until he was 75 years old. He had many first-place finishes in basketball at the local and regional Senior Olympics. At the national level of Senior Olympics, his team took 2nd place in the 3 on 3 basketball. He will be remembered for never knowing a stranger. Born Jan. 6, 1936, in Festus, he was the son of the late Paul and Hester (Frissell) Myers.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years: Jeanie Myers (Porchey); three children: Judy Simon, Lynda (the Rev. Timothy) Morrison and David (Jill) Myers; seven grandchildren: Peter (Ann) Simon, Alexander Simon, Mallory Simon, the Rev. Jenna (Dr. Brock) Johnson, Mason (Kelsey) Morrison, Drake Myers and Stevy Myers; five great-grandchildren: Nicholas Simon, Katherine Simon, Caden Morrison, Molly Johnson and Dylan Johnson; three siblings: Dale (Judy) Myers, Mary (the late Harold) Robinson and Ruth Ann (Larry) Barks; and many other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by two siblings: Don Myers and Bill (Greta) Myers.
A memorial visitation is scheduled from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at The River at Eureka, 215 N. Central Ave. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at The River at Eureka. Arrangements are under the direction of Schrader Funeral Home in Ballwin.
