Carlin, Doris

Doris Nell Carlin, 90, of Hillsboro died July 10, 2025, at de Greeff Hospice House in St. Louis County. Mrs. Carlin was a member of Radiant Life Church in Festus and had worked at Jean Ann’s Boutique in Crystal City. She also taught ceramics at the Teamsters Camp in Pevely. She loved attending church and quilting with the ladies of Emanuel Baptist Church. Most of all, she loved visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Born Aug. 21, 1934, in Hillsboro, she was the daughter of the late Deveda (Merceille) and Everett Partney.

She was preceded in death by her husbands: Irvan A. Roth, John R. Layton and Louis J. Carlin.

She is survived by a daughter: Theresa (the late John) Collier and friend Robert Reich of Hillsboro; two sons: Bruce W. (Bridget) Roth of Festus and Timothy P. Layton Sr. of West Plains; a brother: Donald (Sherri) Partney of Union; a sister: Darla Gartner of De Soto; 13 grandchildren: Heather (Don) Woolsey, Mendy Schlater, Dawn (Bobby) Thompson, Kristen (Brian) Ashby, Ryan (Lindsey) Roth, Tiffany Roth, Joshua Collier, Jason Collier, Timothy Layton Jr., Alec Layton, Wendy (Luke) Long, Christa Layton and Abigail Layton; 15 great-grandchildren: Kiley Roth, Vayda Roth, Blake Roth, Landon Ashby, Logan Ashby, Nikolas Kennedy, Alexis Kennedy, Summer (fiance JT) Schlater, Reese Barden, Isaiah Tindall, Jacob Collier, Layla Collier, Beau Thompson, Blaine Thompson and Colton Long; and great-great-grandchildren: Everly Kennedy, Monroe Kennedy and one more on the way.

She also was preceded in death by a daughter: Nancy L. Layton; a son: Brian C. (the late Brenda) Roth; a son-in-law: John Collier; a sister: Wanda (Elvin) Phillips; and three brothers: Paul “Gene” (the late Mary Ellen) Partney, Johnny (Linda survives of Bonne Terre) Partney and Jim Partney. 

Visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. until funeral services at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at Vinyard Funeral Home, 616 W. Main St., in Festus, officiated by Pastor Randy Gray of Radiant Life Church. Burial will follow in Hematite Methodist Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Radiant Life Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
