Donald J. Deters, 91, of Arnold died May 20, 2025. In his younger years, Mr. Deters enjoyed being a college athlete and cross-country coach and went on to be a school counselor and teacher for many years. He loved agriculture, especially farm and dairy. He was also a handyman who designed and built his own family's home. He also was a well-known and active member of his church. Born Feb. 8, 1934, he was the son of the late Aloysius "AJ" John and Eugenia C. (Hummel) Deters.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years: Geraldine Rose "Gerry" (Kertz) Deters; six children: Mark J. Deters, Diane M. (Brian) Fleetwood, Joseph E. (Courtney Suzanne) Deters, Daniel J. (Elli) Deters, Mary A. (Sean M.) Sweeney and Madonna A. (Andrew D. Warne) Goldacker; four siblings: Blandina (Don) Spitznagle, Carolyn (Harry) Henrichsen, Juliana (Elmer) Brown and Claire (Phil) Hayes; nine grandchildren: Nicole, Brendan, Adam, Tyler, Alexander, William, Vivian, Abigail, Anneliese and one more on the way; two great-grandchildren: Sophie and Freya; and many other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by two siblings: Aloysius "Al" (Betty) Deters and Michael (Anna) Deters.
Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. until a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at Holy Family Parish Center, 2300 Church Road, in Arnold, 63010. A graveside service will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery. A celebration of life will follow services from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Arnold Knights of Columbus Hall with food and drinks provided. All are welcome. Memorials may be made to the Holy Family Parish. Arrangements are under the direction of Fey Funeral Home in St. Louis County.
