Cayce, Charles

Charles Edward Cayce, 81, of Festus died Jan. 17, 2025. Mr. Cayce began his career as a firefighter in July of 1965 and was promoted to captain in 1986. In 2000, he was promoted to chief and retired in 2009. He also served on the Crystal City Fire Department until 1988. Besides being a fire chief, he was also a volunteer police officer, paramedic and worked for the Festus Street Department. He was on many boards in the community such as the Festus Park Board, Fire Board and Paramedic Board. In his free time, he loved barbecuing and cooking, hunting and camping with his family and doing yard work. Most of all, he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Born Sept. 3, 1943, in St. Louis, he was the son of the late Charles J. "Jazz" Cayce and Mary Louise (Jones) Walton.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years: Christine Theresa (Joiner) Cayce of Festus, whom he married in 1968; four sons: Paul (Gissel) Mosby of Sacramento, Calif., Charles (Jessica) Mosby Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., Maurice Mosby of Paraguay, South America, and Donald Mosby of St. Louis; a daughter: Marketta Conley of Palm Springs, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a cousin who was like a sister: Charlotte Thornton of Los Angeles, Calif.; a nephew: Charles (Yolanda) Shores of Killeen, Texas; and numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a daughter: Inez "Dwan" Mosby; a brother: Glenard Cayce; and a sister: Rose (Latham) Robinson.

Visitation is scheduled from noon until services at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at Mahn Twin City Chapel, 515 Collins Ave., in Festus. A celebration of life will follow at Amvets Post 42 in Herculaneum after a procession by the firehouse. Memorials may be made to a fund being established at the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Mahn Twin City Chapel.
