Barry W. Ellis, 81, of Festus died Jan. 22, 2025, at his home. Mr. Ellis was a professor of American history at Jefferson College for more than 40 years. In addition to his teaching, he served as department chairperson, Academic Affairs Committee chairperson, sponsor of Phi Theta Kappa and president of the Missouri Community College Association. He wrote the grant that created the History Center and Jefferson Tours which he also escorted for many years. He was chosen as “Teacher of the Year” by Phi Theta Kappa and former students praised his story-telling approach to history. Mr. Ellis graduated from Central Missouri University with his bachelor of arts, master's and specialist degrees. He was an active member of De Soto Hope United Church of Christ, serving as president of the Consistory several times. In his free time, he loved spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed playing basketball, poker, bridge and fantasy football. He was an avid reader, flower gardener and traveler. Born June 17, 1943, in Sedalia, he was the son of the late Virgil and Estelle (Jenkins) Ellis.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years: Marilyn E. (Smiley) Ellis of Festus; two children: Christi Jung of Affton and John Ellis of Pevely; two grandchildren: Alyssa (Rodney) Edmundson and David Jung; and many other family members and friends.
Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. until a funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at Hope United Church of Christ, 100 3rd St., in De Soto, officiated by the Rev. Audrey Alexander and Pastor Bruce Jovaag. Memorials may be made to Hope United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 625, De Soto, 63020, or Mercy Hospice, 151 Industrial Drive, Festus, 63028.
