Antoinette Ilene “Toni” Haag, 97, of St. Louis County died Feb. 14, 2025, at Sunrise of Des Peres. Mrs. Haag will be remembered as an independent, capable and strong woman. In high school, her first job was at The Stoplight in Festus. She became a licensed esthetician and hairstylist. She worked for many years at the salon in Famous-Barr in St. Louis while she raised her boys. Later, she was employed at the Ladue Shop. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Imperial. Known for her cooking, she made sure to have a home-cooked dinner ready on the table as well as homemade pies, cakes and cookies. Her fried chicken was considered “legendary.” She was an accomplished seamstress and landscape painter and she liked to fish. She loved going to “The Opera” (The Muny) with Loretta. She also loved to travel and was an avid reader who enjoyed keeping up with current events. Born Feb. 1, 1928, in Festus, she was the daughter of the late Esther (Bauman) and Lawrence Basler.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Milton Haag.
She is survived by three sons: Gary (Christina Bych) Murphy of Ann Arbor, Mich., Matthew (Mary Jo) Murphy of Arnold and Chad (Deborah Herbst) Murphy of St. Louis County; a brother: Glennon Basler; a sister-in-law: Doris Basler; four grandchildren: Max (Sarah) Murphy, Mark Murphy, Luke Murphy and Catherine Murphy; a great-grandson: Leon Murphy; and many nieces and nephews and their families.
She also was preceded in death by a sister: Loretta Schoenborn; a brother: Melvin Basler; a brother-in-law: Don Schoenborn; a sister-in-law: Shirley Basler; and a niece: Denise Zurliene.
Services will be private. Burial will be held at a later date in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Crystal City. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
