Elizabeth Jean “Betty” Bourgeois, 89, of Bonne Terre died April 26, 2025, in Barnhart. Mrs. Bourgeois was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Mehlville, where she also worked as a custodian for 32 years. She loved spending time with her family, especially her husband. She loved cooking for family and friends and was known for her famous “hot milk sponge cake.” In her free time, she enjoyed crocheting, working on puzzle books and watching classic TV series. She is remembered for her love, service and quiet strength. Born April 18, 1936, in New Madrid, she was the daughter of the late Alvina (Beaher) and William E. Riggs.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years: Richard H. Bourgeois.
She is survived by two daughters: Marcia (John) Barron of Barnhart and Nanette (Charles “Chuck”) Henry of Indianapolis, Ind.; six grandchildren: Michael (Sara) Barron, Mandy (Chris) Johnson, William (Christy) Barron, Gina (Jeff) Long, Charles “CJ” (Megan) Henry Jr. and Cortni (Chase) Nourie; 10 great-grandchildren and three more expected soon.
She also was preceded in death by a son: Mark (Linda survives of South St. Louis County) Bourgeois; and a brother: Howard (Charlotte survives of Texas) Riggs.
Private family services with interment will be in Shepherd Hills Cemetery in Barnhart. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
