Marty Nickelson

Marty Joseph Nickelson, 67, of Pevely, died Jan. 8, 2024, at Mercy Jefferson in Crystal City. Mr. Nickelson was a U.S. Army veteran. He worked as a truck driver, as well as sold and regrooved truck tires. He was known as “the Tire Man” among truckers in the state.” He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and granddog, floating on the Huzzah, camping, traveling out West and attending concerts. He was a war history buff and loved World War II movies. His interests included motorcycles, cars, trucks, antique vehicles and rock music especially AC/DC. His most prized possession was his yellow 1949 International named “Thunderstruck.” Born April 18, 1956, in Tiff, he was the son of the late Carl Nickelson and Virgie (White) Nickelson.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years: LaVonne Fields of Pevely; four stepchildren: Daniel (Laura) Duncan, Rachel (Steve) Anderson of Herculaneum, Michael Duncan of De Soto and Joseph (Sonya) Fields of Cedar Hill; step-grandchildren: Victoria, Austin A., Rebecca, Everett, Joseph, Izabelle, Jacob, Austin, Delaney, Gina, Jahleah and granddog King Doodles; siblings: Bobby (Jan) Nickelson, Curtis (Cheryl) Nickelson, Debbie (Danny) Hinton and Kelly Nickelson; sisters-in-law: Patricia (Craig) Johnson and Rena (Brent) Vaghn; and many other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by four brothers: Lindell Nickelson, Donnie Nickelson, Stanley Nickelson and Pete Nickelson; a sister: Virgie Gabrhel; step-granddaughter: Angel Duncan; father-in-law: Garland Carron; and mother-in-law: Irene Carron.

A celebration of life will be held 1-4 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Amvets Post 42 in Herculaneum. Burial is at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, at the National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks. Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital or Shriners Hospitals for Children.
