Mary Gray Hassell, 81, of Festus died April 29, 2017, at her home. Mrs. Hassell was a retired respiratory therapist at the former Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Crystal City. Born July 16, 1935, in Rush Tower, she was the daughter of the late Viola Mae "Toots" (Moran) and Archie Louis "Arch" Martin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Hassell.
She is survived by a daughter: Janet (John) Boyer of Festus; three sons: Steven (Carol) Gray, Tom (Joann Laws) Gray and Richard Gray, all of Festus; a sister: Linda Key of Festus; two brothers: Jerry L. (Peggy) Martin of Herculaneum and Johnny Martin of Festus; seven grandchildren: Danny Kent, Tonya Weiss, Stephanie (Michael) Holland, Jennifer (Cliff) Reimer, Ethan Gray, Jacob Laws and Richard Gray; and nine great-grandchildren: Justin Kent, Lacey Weiss, Noah Reimer, Claire Reimer, Lillian Reimer, Abigail Holland, Anna Holland, Andrew Holland, and Dylan Gray.
She was preceded in death by a sister: Shirley Courtway, and two brothers: James E. Martin and Eugene Martin.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at Vinyard Funeral Home, 616 W. Main, in Festus. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, at the funeral home, officiated by the Rev. Michael Holland. Burial is in the Danby Cemetery south of Festus. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
