Kurbie James Moon, 76, of Pevely died Dec. 29, 2021, at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. Mr. Moon was retired from St. Joe/Doe Run lead smelter in Herculaneum after a 37-year career. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and an avid crappie fisherman. Born June 7, 1945, in Festus, he was the son of the late Elizabeth (Sirk) and Fredrick Moon.
He is survived by three daughters: Dawn Sanford of De Soto, Donetta Clark of Greenville, Tenn., and Tina Mattison of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four sons: Kurbie Moon Jr. of De Soto, Dusty James Moon of Wetherford, Texas, Russell Mattison of Ste. Genevieve and Terry Mattison of Perryville; nine grandchildren: James Moon, Tachela Henderson, Michelle Henderson, Latasha Moon, DJ Moon, James Helton, Nicholas Smetzer, Paige Urfer and Jordan Urfer; five great-grandchildren: Payten Helton, Taylor Helton, Kiley Smetzer, Ashlyn Smetzer and Jaycee Smetzer; a brother: Michael Moon of Herculaneum; and a sister: Rosemary Cabender of Arkansas. He was preceded in death by three sisters: Paralee, Macie, and Nancy.
Visitation is scheduled from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at Vinyard Funeral Home, 616 W. Main St., in Festus. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 7, at the funeral home Burial with full military honors will follow in the National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
