John A. Schmitz, 93, of Hillsboro died Dec. 24, 2021, at the Orchid Terrace Retirement Community in St. Louis County. Mr. Schmitz was a veteran of the U.S. Merchant Marine and was retired from Laclede Gas. Born Feb. 28, 1928, in St. Louis, he was the son of the late Bertha and John Schmitz. He was preceded in death by his wife: Rose (Bequette) Schmitz.
He is survived by two sons: Brandt (Helen) Schmitz of Crystal City and Michael (Cathy) Schmitz of Festus; a daughter: Luann (Fred) Huff of St. Louis County; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son: Russell (Mary Frances) Schmitz; a brother: Charles Schmitz; and three sisters: Bertha, Edna and Dorothy.
Private services will be held Dec. 30 at Kutsi Funeral Home in south St. Louis County. Burial is in the National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Kutis Funeral Home.
