Carlton, James

James Paul “Jim” Carlton, 80, of Barnhart died April 16, 2017, in Fenton. Mr. Carlton retired as a master sergeant from the U.S. Air Force after 21 years of service. He trained in computers while in the service, and afterward worked as a programmer of large mainframe computers at businesses such as banks. He was a member of the Festus-Crystal City Conservation Club and loved fishing. He also enjoyed going to auctions, mostly to add to his extensive collection of fishing gear. Born June 25, 1936, in Duckhill, Miss., he was the son of the late Thelma (Jones) and John Lindsey Carlton.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years: Patricia J. Carlton of Barnhart; two sons: Vincent W. (Kelly) Carlton of Plato and Gregory G. (Tracey) Carlton of Bloomsdale; a daughter: Theresa L. McFarland of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; nine grandchildren: Kenny, Casey, Collin, Eric Jr., James, Kristinia, Sandi, Jessie and Kaitie; eight great-grandchildren: Kelly, Samantha, S.J., Sterling, Savana, Eric, Ethan and Damon; and a brother: John Milton (Mavis) Carlton of Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by a brother: J.C. (the late Doris) Carlton; and a great-grandson: Juan Gregory.

Funeral services were held April 21 at St. Lucas Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Louis. Burial was in the National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements were under the direction of Kutis Funeral Home in south St. Louis County.
