Mitchell, Jack

Jack W. “Jackie” Mitchell, 88, of De Soto died May 3, 2022, in Chesterfield. Mr. Mitchell joined the U.S. Navy after high school and served more than two years. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Local 513 Operating Engineers and was a member of Masonic Lodge 131 in Potosi, Amvets Post 48 in De Soto and Elks Lodge 689 in De Soto. He spent many hours as a volunteer serving food, calling bingo and working meat shoots, and enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Born Dec. 22, 1933, in St. John, he was the son of the late Chancel and Betty (Close) Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his wife: Edith (Portell) Mitchell.

He is survived by four sons: Randy (Donna) Mitchell of Jacksonville, Fla., Tom (Lori) Kneip of Cadet, Roger (Debbie) Kneip of New Florence and Jeff (Pam) Bailey of De Soto; a daughter: Pam (Rich) Bartoloni of Arnold, a sister: Betty (Gere) Guy of O'Fallon; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends. He also was preceded in death by a brother: Bob Mitchell; and a sister: Shirley Hezel.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, at Mahn Funeral Home, 900 N. Main St., in De Soto, officiated by the Rev. Gene Moses. Burial will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery in De Soto. Memorials may be made to the St. Louis Regional Chapter of the ALS Association. Arrangements are under the direction of Mahn Funeral Home.
