Glenwood Lee “Woody” LeGrand, 97, of Lee’s Summit, formerly of Festus, died Feb. 7, 2019, at the John Knox Care Center in Lee’s Summit. Mr. LeGrand, a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, was a retired maintenance supervisor at PPG Industries in Crystal City. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Festus-Crystal City, serving as a deacon, property committee chairman and an enthusiastic choir member. He later joined the First Baptist Church in Lee’s Summit. He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan, having listened to radio broadcasts of their games faithfully as a child, and was never without his Cardinals baseball cap. He was passionate about music and was nicknamed the “Music Man” at John Knox Care Center, where he was a member of the Country Time band and often played country, gospel, and some Hawaiian selections for residents. He was selected to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in October 2018. Born June 18, 1921, in Herculaneum, he was the son of the late Beulah (Huddleston) and Ernest LeGrand. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years: Betty (Harris) LeGrand, whom he married July 21, 1942.
He is survived by three children: Randy (Dale Berger) LeGrand, Terry (June) LeGrand and Sue (Dick Summers) Kariker; seven grandchildren: Chris (Mary) LeGrand, Robyn (Don) Smith, Carolyn (Chris Stromsnish) Barnett, Jackie (Jeff) Burke, Kevin (Jennifer) LeGrand, Jason Kariker and Brooke (Derek) Fishel; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A celebration of life is scheduled from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at John Knox Village Courtyards Community Center, 512 NW. Murray Road, in Lee’s Summit. Burial is in Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens in Crystal City. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 2 NE.
