Gary Emerson Smith, 79, of Englewood, Fla., died Feb. 5, 2022, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Mr. Smith graduated from Dundee Central High School and served in the U.S. Navy. He worked for Kodak in Rochester, N.Y., then later for Morton Salt Mine, a copper mine in Arizona and the AMAX lead mine in Missouri. He was born Sept. 6, 1942, in Penn Yan, N.Y., the son of the late Ralph E. and Winifred D. (Mitchell) Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife: Judy A. (Lynn) Smith, whom he married on Feb. 23, 1963.

He is survived by two sisters: Janine Putnam of Pennsylvania and Nora (Mike) Statler of Dexter; two sisters-in-law: Wanda Bailey and Joyce (Donnie) Tyler, both of New York; a brother-in-law: Paul (special friend Carol Robeson) Lynn of New York; a daughter: Luann (Scott) Jadwin of Salem; two sons: Brian (Kim) Smith of Salem and Steve (Barbara) Smith of Hillsboro; special friend Claire Shugrue-Pannier of Englewood, Fla.; nine grandchildren: Tyler (Kari) Smith of Imperial, Justin (girlfriend Ashleigh Adams) Smith of Arnold, Griffin Smith of Hillsboro, Logan (girlfriend Sarah Berding) Smith of Hillsboro, Kristan (Kyle) East of Friendship, Tenn., Matthew (Brianna) Jadwin of Rolla, Julie (boyfriend, Daniel Anders) Jadwin of Braidwood, Ill., Ashley (Lance) Jadwin of Martin, Tenn., and Jordan (girlfriend Ashley Sellers) Jadwin of Licking; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents-in-law: Marcella Lynn and Elwood Lynn; a sister: Gayle Batterson Gulyas; a sister-in-law: Donna Lynn; three brothers-in-law: Ray Bailey, Richard Batterson, and Dr. J. David Putnam; and a nephew: Jeff Bailey.

Visitation is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. until a funeral service at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at Kutis Funeral Home, 5255 Lemay Ferry Road, in south St. Louis County, officiated by L.A. Stauffer. Burial with military honors will follow in the National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks. Memorials may be made to the BackStoppers or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Arrangements are under the direction of Kutis Funeral Home.
