Florence Irene “Flo” Stropes, 93, of Festus, formerly of Pevely, died Oct. 20, 2018, at Festus Manor Nursing Home. Mrs. Stropes was a registered nurse who worked at the Koch Hospital in St. Louis County until its 1983 shutdown, then later at Scenic View Nursing Center. She enjoyed gardening and could reliably be seen riding her lawn mower around her property, utility cart in tow. She attended Our Lady Catholic Church in Festus. Born Sept. 2, 1925, in St. Louis, she was the daughter of the late Bertha (Seger) and Fred Sommers. She was preceded in death by her husband: Andrew Stropes.
She is survived by her former daughter-in-law: Susan Stropes of Pevely; a son: Chris (Cindy) Stropes of St. Louis Park, Minn.; four grandchildren: Katie (Matt) Jost, Patrick (Nathan) Stropes, Libby (Steven) Kane and Ellie (fiance Max) Stropes; two great-grandchildren: Abbie Jost and Colton Martin-Stropes; and many extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by a brother: Fred Sommers Jr.; and three sisters: Ann Bruemmer; Dolores Stuckenschneider and Frances Ryan.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Mrs. Stropes’ family suggests that the best way to honor her memory is to play a game of “Yellow Car.” Arrangements are under the direction of Mahn Twin City Chapel in Festus.
