Darrell Owen Shy, 70, of Festus died Sept. 30, 2019, at his home. Mr. Shy was retired from the former White-Rogers Corp. in Fenton after 35 years. He was a member and Deacon of First Baptist Church in Festus-Crystal City; and a lifelong member of Elks Lodge 1721. He was an avid sports fan, serving as a Little League and Rock Memorial American Legion Post baseball coach, and was a member of the Herculaneum High School Football “Chain Gang” for 30 years. Born Oct. 25, 1948, in Ironton, he was the son of the late Clarence and Margaret (Helms) Shy. He is survived by his wife: Sharon (Finney) Shy; a son: Justin (Anna) Shy of St. Charles; a daughter: Erin (Derrick Kilgore) Shy of St. Louis, three grandchildren: Owen, Hudson and Hadley Shy; five sisters: Ina (Bill) Hamilton of Louisville, Ky., Marcella (Glen) Crase of Thayer, Mary (the late Bob) Hayes of Pevely, Joyce Shy of Herculaneum and Michelle (Mike) Shadowens of Festus; six brothers: Lavern “Everett” (Faye) Shy of O’Fallon, James (Sandra) Shy of St. Charles, Denzil “Ray” Shy of Lake St. Louis, Lawrence (the late Brenda) Shy of St. Charles, Ron (Missy) Shy of Barnhart and Clarence (the late Lonnie) Shy of Herculaneum.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Robert Lee Shy.
Visitation is scheduled from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, at Vinyard Funeral home, 616 W. Main St., in Festus. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7, at the funeral home, officiated by Mercy Jefferson Hospice Chaplain Mark McMullin. Burial is in the Shepherd Hills Cemetery in Barnhart. Memorials may be made to Mercy Jefferson Hospice. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
