Daniel E. Peterein, 92, of Festus died May 18, 2016, at St. Luke’s Hospital in St. Louis County. Mr. Peterein was a retired glassworker for PPG Industries and a member of Our Lady Catholic Church in Festus. He had worked for L.D. Compton Construction and was the owner and operator of Peterein’s “Hilltop” Pool in Festus. He was a member of VFW Post 3777, Elks Lodge 1721 and the Jefferson County Squares dancing club. Born July 11, 1923, in Silica, he was the son of the late David A. and Pauline Agnes (Oberle) Peterein. He was preceded in death by his wife: Marcella H. (McCormack) Peterein.
He is survived by three daughters: Darlene Waggoner of Hawk Point, Sharon K. (David Sr.) Smith of Festus and Brenda (Monte) Sinclair of Woodstock, Ga.; a son: Tim Peterein of Festus; a brother: Charles F. (Margaret) Peterein of Crystal City; a sister-in-law: Nora Peterein of Festus; seven grandchildren: David Smith Jr., Denise (Keith) Grass, Danny (Donna) Sinclair, Rebecca Waggoner, Nathan Sinclair, Gabriel Sinclair and Luke Peterein; four great-grandchildren: Cody Grass, Nicholas Grass, Jewell Sinclair and Lilly Anne Sinclair; and his beloved pet, Daisey.
He was preceded in death by two daughters: Judy Woodland and Shelby Jean Shy; four brothers: John J. (the late Julia) Peterein, Arthur J. Peterein, David V. (the late Rachel) Peterein and Anthony (the late Earline) Peterein; and three sisters: Christine Schepp, Lucille E. (the late Edward) Becker and Pauline (the late Daniel) Trunk.
Funeral Mass was held May 23 at Our Lady Church, officiated by Father Jeffrey Maassen. Burial was in Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens in Crystal City. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Arrangements were under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
