Jones, Craig

Craig B. Jones, 70, of Urbandale, Iowa, formerly of De Soto, died Nov. 21, 2014, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Urbandale. Mr. Jones was born Feb. 23, 1944, in De Soto, the son of the late Leslie and Catherine (Cay) Jones, and was a 1962 graduate of De Soto High School, where he was an honor student and noted football and basketball athlete. He earned degrees at Westminster College in Fulton and Michigan State University, then entered the finance and banking industry. He worked in St. Paul, Minn., then moved to Urbandale, where he was co-founder of the Waukee State Bank. He was active in many civic and community groups including the chamber of commerce, where he served as president. After retirement, he remained active in civic affairs and served as an expert witness in banking and finance in the Iowa court system. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of 1st lieutenant serving active duty in Germany during the Vietnam era.

He is survived by his wife: Sara “Sallie” Zibell Jones, his high school sweetheart, whom he married Sept. 6, 1968, in Kaiserslautern, Germany; three children: Adam Jones, Peter (Jamie) Jones and Kate (Andrew) Young, all of Des Moines, Iowa; a sister: Catherine Le of Columbia; a sister-in-law: Doris Jones of Atlanta, Ga.; and seven grandchildren: Tanner Jones, Quinlan Craig Jones, Theodore Young, Abiel Young, Elliana Young, Keifer Jones and Harper Jones.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Kirk and Jessie Jones and Dorothy Wilson Jones; and a brother: Bruce Jones.

Funeral services were held Nov. 25 at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Urbandale. Burial was in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter. Memorials may be made to the Urbandale Caring Corps or to the  Iowa Veteran Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Hamilton Funeral Home in Des Moines, Iowa.
