Niehaus, Clarence

Clarence “Red” Niehaus, 92, of Hillsboro died July 15, 2020, at the Hillsboro home of his daughter. Mr. Niehaus worked as a superintendent for Baker Forms Construction Co. for 47 years until his retirement, and contributed to the construction of many buildings on the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus, including the Student Center, Saluki Stadium, McLeod Theater, Communications Building, Quigley Hall and Faner Hall. He was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of corporal. He was a member of his local VFW and American Legion posts, the Indiana Carpenter’s Union and an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Carbondale. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and woodworking. He was born  Nov. 13, 1927, in Farina, Ill., the son of the late Louis and Alma (Wacholtz) Niehaus. He was preceded in death by his wife: Lillian Ruth (Carter) Niehaus, whom he married Sept. 3, 1955, in Rock Hill, S.C., and who died March 9, 1998. 

He is survived by his wife: Charlotte (Chapman) Niehaus, whom he married on Oct. 30, 1999, in Carbondale; two daughters: Debi (Denny) Sparks of Hillsboro and Janice Niehaus of St. Louis; three stepchildren: Gail (Mike) Peterman of Carbondale, Scott Chapman of Carbondale and Bryan (Janice) Chapman of Winter Springs, Fla.; two grandchildren: Amber Babb and Daniel (Emily) Perschbacher; six stepgrandchildren: Jenna Schultz, Justin Peterman, Jessica Chapman, Bradley Chapman, Stephen Chapman and Jimmy Chapman; three great-grandchildren: Lillie, Landon and Amelia; two step-great-grandchildren: Bentley and McKenna; and five sisters: Melinda, Iva, Fern, Jonnie and Pat.

He was preceded in death by a daughter: Sheila Marie Niehaus; three sisters: Velva, Wilma and Jane; and two brothers: Leon and Orville.

Visitation is at 10 a.m. and a funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 23, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Carbondale, Ill., officiated by Pastor Robert Gray. Burial with military honors is in the Murdale Gardens of Memory in Murphysboro, Ill. Memorials may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church in Carbondale. Arrangements are under the direction of Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale.
