Charles Frederick Peterein, Sr., 95, of Festus died July 30, 2020 at his home. Mr. Peterein was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II. He worked as a dairy farmer and custodian for Crystal City High School. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Crystal City, a charter member of the ROMEO club, a 63-year member of American Legion Post 554 and a member of VFW Post 3777. He was also was named grand marshal for the 2019 Herculaneum Veterans’ Day Parade. He enjoyed tinkering with mechanical items, especially clocks.
Born Jan. 30, 1925, in Silica, he was the son of the late Pauline (Oberle) and David Peterein.
He is survived by his wife: Margaret (Roussin) Peterein; three sons: Charles (Jan) Peterein of Chicago, Bob (Judy) Peterein of St. Louis and Mike (Sally) Peterein of Festus; three daughters: Cheri (Bob) Lucas of Crystal City, Cathie (Gene) Bequette of Festus and Corkey (Tom) LaFloure of Crystal City; 16 grandchildren: Jenny (Mike) Daly, Kelly Kipp, David (Emily) Byers, Aimee (Scott) Nolen, Kari (Steve) Hendrix, Jon Bequette, Katie (Dez) Bequette, Sarah (Dominic) Withouse, Melissa Peterein, Kelly Peterein, Nikki (Brent) Sevener, Meghan (Michael) McClain, Mike (Brittany) Peterein, Jr., Rebeque LaFloure, Libbie LaFloure and Haley LaFloure; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five brothers: John (the late Julia) Peterein, Daniel (the late Marcella) Peterein, David (the late Rachel) Peterein, Anthony (the late Erline Mary) Peterein and Arthur (the late Nora) Peterein; and three sisters: Lucille (the late Edward) Becker, Christine Schepp and Pauline (the late Daniel) Trunk.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 5) at Vinyard Funeral Home, 616 W. Main St., in Festus. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday (Aug. 6) at the funeral home, officiated by Deacon Jerry Stoverink. Burial with full military honors will be in the National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks. Memorials may be made to the St. Louis Order of the Pink Sisters Mount Grace Convent. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
