Bertha Ella Guffey-Hurt, 78, of Piedmont died Oct. 20, 2016, in Piedmont. Mrs. Guffey-Hurt was a homemaker, was a member of Harvest Baptist Church and a former member of Rose of Sharon Church and First Freewill Baptist Church. She enjoyed flowers, gardening and going to church. Born Sept. 15, 1938, in Leachville, Ark.,, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Opal Anges (Harrison) Carter.

 She was preceded in death by her first husband: Oliver Oneal Guffey; and her second husband: Carl D. Hurt.

She is survived by three sons: Jerry Guffey of Troy, Dennis Guffey of Texas and Robert Guffey of St. Louis; a daughter: Tammy Ames of Texas; a brother: Carl E. (Pam) Carter of Gulfport, Miss.; six grandchildren: Eric Ames, Amy and Jamie Evans and Artie, Crystal and Debbie Rankin; and five great-grandchildren: Aurbrey Ann, Weston, William, Mason and Colton.

She was preceded in death by a daughter: Deborah (Darrell) Fisher; three brothers: William Lee Carter, Thomas H. Carter and Carl Wayne Carter; five sisters: Dorothy Wright, Betty Warner, Reba Bremer, Lorene Mary Petty and Linda Carter; and a granddaughter: Jennifer Rankin.

Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 24, at Harvest Baptist Church in Piedmont and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25, at First Freewill Baptist Church, 1401 S. Fifth St., De Soto, followed immediately by funeral services officiated by Bob Thebeau. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, De Soto. Memorials may be made to Joymakers at First Freewill Baptist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Mahn Funeral Home, De Soto.
