Several fun activities will be held around the county this weekend, including a concert and a holiday shopping spree. Not only do those events promise entertainment, but those who turn out for the concert will help a local cause, and attendance at the shopping spree will support local businesses.

You also can help local people in need this weekend by donating canned goods to the Scouting for Food Drive, which benefits local food pantries.

■ A benefit concert featuring Butch Wax and the Hollywoods will be at 7 p.m. tonight (Nov. 15) at Rickman Auditorium, 747 Jeffco Blvd., in Arnold. Tickets cost $15, and proceeds will be used to create memorials to honor the late Richard Simpson, a former Fox C-6 School District administrator. For more information, contact organizers Judy West, 314-691-7182 or judewest@att.net or Mona Von Trapp, 314-606-6464.

■ The Leader Holiday Shopping Spree will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 16) at the Quality Inn, 1200 W. Gannon Drive, in Festus. Admission is free. Local businesses and vendors will be at the event selling a variety of gifts in every price range. Representatives from local farmers markets will be there to sell home-made items, and students from Jefferson College’s Clulinary Arts program will be there with the vinaigrettes they make. In addition, representatives from the Arnold Branch of the Jefferson County Library will bring a large collection of Lego, offering the chance for children and adults alike to demonstrate their creativity. Santa also will be on hand for photos. For details, call the Leader at 636-931-7560.

■ Local Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will stop by county homes on Saturday morning to pick up bags of donated canned goods and other nonperishable food items for the organization’s annual Scouting for Food drive. Scouts dropped off bags last weekend, and local residents are asked to fill them with food and leave them at their front door to be picked up. The food will be divided among local food pantries. Items also may be dropped off at Goodwill stores Nov. 18-24. For more information, go to sff.stlbsa.org.
