COLUMBIA — The man who shot two people in Boone County on Thursday then led troopers on a high-speed chase on U.S. 63 before he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound was recently released from the Missouri Department of Corrections, court records show.

Boone County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Capt. Brian Leer indicated to KOMU 8 News that Steven A. Swanson, the man who died in the crash, is the same person who was pleaded guilty in multiple criminal cases from 2025.

Swanson was charged with third-degree assault on Oct. 20, 2025, after allegedly getting into a fight with a neighbor the day before. Court documents also show he posted a $5,000 bond on Oct. 20.

Two days later, Swanson was accused of stabbing his brother in the leg and charged with second-degree domestic assault by the Boone County prosecutor's office. Swanson was not granted bond following this charge, according to court documents.

Court records indicate a few weeks later he entered a guilty plea with the court to both charges after reaching an agreement with the prosecutor's office.

Swanson was sentenced to four years in prison for the fight with the neighbor and seven years in prison for stabbing his brother. However the execution of the prison sentences were suspended in favor of 120-day shock treatment, according to court records.

Court record show Swanson's shock treatment began on Dec. 22 and ended on April 30.

Swanson was placed on five years of supervised probation following his release from shock treatment, according to court documents.
