The ultimate way to volunteer is to make sacrifices for others. Firefighters, police officers, teachers, pastors, mothers and fathers all make sacrifices to help others, and society is better because of it.
Those who join the military also make huge sacrifices for the betterment of society, and most of them are young people. The average age of those who join the military is just under 21 years old.
These young men and women are casting aside their newly earned freedom to sacrifice for our nation’s defense. Sure, there are opportunities that one earns by joining our armed services, but do those opportunities outweigh the risk?
Our nation has troops stationed in more than 150 nations, many which have some sort of military conflict or insurgency occurring. With the unpredictable nature of those conflicts, there is a chance these young people may see battle and die in it.
Tyson Peppers, 18, of De Soto is one of those young people who decided to take the risk. He, like many others, saw the opportunities the military offered, but he joined the U.S Army for other reasons.
Tyson said he joined the military out of the honor and the respect he has for the armed forces.
“I have a motivation which I find most of this generation lacks,” he said.
Tyson said he believes not being obligated to join the military puts more value in serving.
Many have the opinion today that young people are lazy cell phone-loving degenerates. But, they’re ignoring all the young people who are committed to serving their country.
Tyson is risking his life in defense of our country, which is a lot more than many people do. I, for one, would like to thank Tyson, and others like him, who made the honorable decision to serve our great country.
