Despite a busy schedule of high school classes and extracurricular activities, Festus High School senior Gracey Kamer makes time to help others in need.
She volunteers for mission trips, clothing drives and after school tutoring, all organized through the First Baptist Church of Festus-Crystal City. A recent winter clothing drive was especially successful, Kamer said, with people coming from several surrounding areas to receive donated clothing.
The tutoring program also is a big hit, giving many young students a focused and quiet place to work on school assignments. Along with Kamer, 18, of Festus, adults with teaching backgrounds also help with the tutoring program.
Kamer also regularly participates in out-of-state mission trips. On the trips, she might help out at another church or go out into the community to help others in need. Kamer said she also benefits from taking part in community service projects.
“Serving the community is something that prepares us for the real world and gives us (teens) a chance to change things we complain about in the community,” she said. “Community service instills a heart based on helping others rather than ourselves.”
Kamer said she plans to pursue a career in education and believes the practice of serving others will help her develop the skills necessary to be an effective teacher.
She said her community service also has allowed her the chance to meet some great people.
“I am happy with my experiences because of all the friendships I have made with the people I have worked with,” Kamer said.
She encourages others to volunteer in their communities.
“Getting involved is super easy,” she said. “Just Googling volunteer opportunities in your area brings up a lot of options. Although we all lead busy lives, taking the time to help make life better for others is well worth it.”
