jcso 2 children dead 5-28-24

Investigators search a Mazda SUV that was driven this morning to Festus City Hall and Police Station on Tuesday morning by a woman who allegedly told officers she killed two of her children.

Eureka Police are investigating the thefts of two cars from outside the 5th Street Apartments in the 600 block of Top Notch Lane. The silver 2017 Kia Soul was valued at about $17,000, and the gold 2012 Toyota Camry was worth about $10,000, authorities reported.

A 55-year-old Eureka woman told police she parked the Kia in the parking lot at about 6:30 p.m. July 2, and at about 8:30 a.m. July 3, she discovered it was gone. She said the car was unlocked, but she had the keys to it, the report said.

An officer said a metal mailbox in the apartment complex had been knocked over and appeared to have been struck by a vehicle during the period the Kia was stolen, according to the report.

A neighbor told police he had heard a loud bang between about 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. July 3 and saw a tan-colored car, possibly a Chevrolet Cavalier, and another larger vehicle fleeing the parking lot at the time, Eureka Police reported.

On July 5, police were called back to the apartment complex when a 24-year-old Eureka man reported his Toyota had been stolen. He said he had parked the car at about 6 p.m. July 1 and discovered it was gone at about 7 a.m. July 5, the report said.

The man said he locked the car’s doors, but he had a spare key in the center console. A yellow “Break for Sasquatch” sticker was on the rear of the car, according to the report.

As of July 14, neither car had been recovered, and no suspects had been identified, Sgt. Michael Tapp said. Anyone with information about the thefts should call Eureka Police at 636-938-6600.
