jcso 2 children dead 5-28-24

Investigators search a Mazda SUV that was driven this morning to Festus City Hall and Police Station on Tuesday morning by a woman who allegedly told officers she killed two of her children.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has identified a 34-year-old Imperial man as a suspect in a trailer theft from Custom RV & Boat Storage business in Imperial. Investigators allegedly found items that had been stored in the trailer in the man’s vehicle, the Sheriff's Office reported.

A woman called the Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 2 after discovering her 2018 Arising enclosed trailer, which contained go-kart parts and engines, had been stolen from the company's lot at 5601 Hwy. 61-67. She told investigators she parked the trailer at the business in October, the report said.

After the woman reported the theft, investigators found some of the missing items inside a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder that had been towed from the storage business on Dec. 22. The items were visible through the SUV window, and the detective obtained a search warrant on Jan. 8, retrieved the stolen items and returned them to the victim, spokesman Grant Bissell said.

The Pathfinder, which appeared to have been abandoned at the business, belonged to the suspect, who also is a suspect in a different theft, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

As of Jan. 12, the suspect had not been arrested, and the trailer had not been recovered, Bissell said.
