A father saw his two teenage children fall into an icy pond in Cedar Hill, called 911 and went to help them before falling through the ice himself. The incident happened Monday evening (Jan. 24) at Hwy. NN and Kent Drive, Cedar Hill Fire Protection District Chief Mick Fischer said.
Fischer said one of the two young teens was playing on the pond and fell through the ice, so the other teen went to help and fell through as well. Then, the father fell into the pond, but was able to help his children out and then get himself out before firefighters arrived on the scene at 5:35 p.m., Fischer said.
He said crews treated the family for hypothermia and then drove them to their nearby home.
Fischer urges people stay off icy ponds and rivers.
“I think the big thing is that we have had a mild winter so these bodies of water are warmer. They don’t freeze when we have cold spells,” he said. “We haven't had the long, cold weather to make ice safe to go out on.”
Fischer said Big River Ambulance also responded to the scene.
