A man’s body was retrieved from the Mississippi River Tuesday afternoon (July 28) near Rush Island in southern Jefferson County, authorities report.
The man was identified as James Monroe, 41, of Hillsboro, Texas. Workers with the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Water Division retrieved the body.
Cpl. Juston Wheetley of the patrol said it appears no foul play was involved.
“How he got in the water is still under investigation,” he said.
Capt. Ralph Brown of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said authorities responded to a call around 12:55 p.m. from people on a passing tugboat who spotted the body floating in the river.
The body was transported to the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Rush Island is about 10 miles southeast of Festus.
